Following the Orlando shooting which
was the worst mass shooting in the United States’ modern history, attempts were
made to implement gun control laws but they all failed as they were not
accepted.
Four (4) separate gun control
measures were unable to be passed into law by the United States Senate as there
were conflicting views about each measure by Democratic and Republican
Senators. Two (2) of the proposed measures were suggested by Republicans while
the other two (2) were suggested by Democrats.
The 1st Proposal was by a
Republican which involved updating background check systems for gun purchases. The
2nd Proposal which was by a Democrat involved expanding background
check systems for those buying guns to require checks at gun shows and for
online purchases. The 3rd Proposal was by a Republican and it
involved the delay of gun sales to individuals included on the government
terror watch list. The final Proposal was by a democrat to bar all gun sales to
individuals on the government’s terror watch list. All proposed gun control measures
were rejected as they fell short of the 60 votes needed for passage in the
100-member chamber.
