'LIGHTNING STRIKES' IN INDIA LEAVE AT LEAST 93 PEOPLE DEAD AND OVER 20 WOUNDED



 
 
            ‘Lightning Strikes’ in the Indian states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand have left about 93 people dead and over 20 wounded. According to reports, most of the victims were said to have been working on their farms when the incident happened. 56 people died in Bihar while 37 died in the other states.

            The BBC reported that Lightning strikes are common in India during heavy monsoon rains and it was also revealed by the National Crime Records Bureau that 2,000 people have been killed yearly by Lightning strikes in India since 2005. Safety tips during lightning strikes were also given by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents and they include:

a) Seek shelter inside a large building or a car

b) Get out of wide, open spaces and away from exposed hilltops

c) Do not shelter beneath tall or isolated trees

d) If you are on water, get to the shore and off wide, open beaches as quickly as possible

e) If you have nowhere to shelter, make yourself as small a target as possible by crouching down with your feet together, hands on knees and head tucked in
