A
law was passed in Hawaii which made it become the first state to put gun owners
on the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s database and monitor them.
The
bill was signed on Thursday
by David Ige, the governor of the State which allows police to enroll firearms
applicants and individuals who are registering their firearms into “Rap Back,”
which is a Federal Bureau of Investigation database that monitors criminal
activities by people under investigation or in positions of trust, Reuters
reported.
The
law takes effect immediately. “Rap Back” allows Hawaii police to be notified
when a Hawaii firearm owner is arrested anywhere in the U.S. In addition, the
law allows Hawaii police to evaluate whether a firearm owner should continue
owning a gun after being arrested based on circumstances surrounding his/her
arrest. This move came after Democrats agreed to support gun control measures that
would keep people on the No Fly list from buying guns. The No Fly list is a
list created and maintained by the United States government’s Terrorist
Screening Center (TSC) of people who are prohibited from boarding a commercial
aircraft in or out of the United States.
